Brief Description:  Nose gear wheel pant

I tried fitting the wheel pant to the front strut. Sheet L05, Detail A, shows the fork touching at the underside of the wheel pant with the fork hole 1-21/32" from the bottom edge of the pant. I ended up with a mess by using the print dimensions. I drilled the 2" strut hole first and the 3/8" axle holes. With the fork in as far as it will go before contacting the curve of the pant, the axle hole is less than 1" from the edge. Also, for the tire to fit, I had to start trimming the forward part of the wheel opening. To get the pant to sit low enough, I ended up cutting it apart, planning to glass in the ~1" gap at the top necessary to get the pant lower on the strut.

I think part of the problem started because the 2" strut hole in the pant is referenced from the back edge of the pant, and the axle hole from the front edge. Scaling the drawing, it appears the pant is supposed to be ~22" long, but the furnished part is ~20" long. Since the dimensions are referenced from both ends, this presents a problem.

Re-thinking the whole process, this is what I think I should have done:

1. Determine the center of the opening along the flat sides using a straight edge, looking at where the curve is equal at both ends of 11" (the tire diameter). Mark the centerline of the 11".
2. Put the open end of the fork into the pant at the centerline and angled about 20 degrees toward the back of the pant. 20 degrees is about the angle of the strut. Push the fork in as far as it will go until the pant starts to hit the curve of the fork. Mark the end of the fork on the pant. On mine this is about 5-7/8".
3. Measure the distance from the mark on the fork to the center of the axle hole. Starting at the mark made on the pant where the fork ended, measure back the distance measured to the axle hole and make a mark at the pant centerline. This becomes the reference mark for the axle holes. On mine, the mark is about 7/8" up from the bottom of the pant.
